Description: Resources on motherhood issues for women living with HIV

MOTHERHOOD / MATERNIDAD (traducción en español abajo)

One of the hardest issues for women and girls in relation to HIV is the attitude of others as to whether or not they should have children. Nowadays there has been so much scientific advance in medical treatment and care that it is entirely possible for people with HIV to live productively for many years with HIV; and for women to give birth to children without HIV being transmitted to them. Unfortunately, many even in the health care sector are not yet aware of these medical advances and, even if they are, many are still against the idea of people with HIV having children as a matter of principle.
 
Stepping Stones Plus therefore addresses this issue as one of its key themes. It offers exercises which encourage whole-community support for people with HIV who wish to have their own children.
 
Another Salamander Trust/Strategies for Hope product, the Women, HIV and Motherhood Audio Project, offers more material on this issue. It is available on CD as well as on the internet.

MATERNIDAD

Una de las cuestiones más difíciles para las mujeres y las niñas en relación con el VIH es la actitud de otros en cuanto a si deben o no tener hijos. Hoy en día se ha avanzado tanto científica en el tratamiento médico y la atención que es perfectamente posible que las personas con VIH puedan vivir de manera productiva durante muchos años; y que las mujeres den a luz a niños sin que el  VIH se les transmita. Lamentablemente, muchos, incluso en el sector salud, no están al tanto de los avances médicos, e incluso si lo están, muchos todavía van en contra de la idea que personas con VIH tengan hijos como una cuestión de principio.
 
Paso a Paso Plus responde a este problema como uno de sus temas clave. Ofrece ejercicios que fomentan el apoyo de toda la comunidad para las personas con VIH que deseen tener sus propios hijos.
 
Otro producto del Salamander Trust/Estrategias de Esperanza es el proyecto de audio, Mujeres, el VIH y la Maternidad (Women, HIV and Motherhood) que ofrece más material sobre este tema. Está disponible en CD, así como en Internet.
